FEEDING THE FUTURE
There are more than 15-million children in this country who are at risk of hunger. The consequences of hunger are much more than a growling stomach. Poor nutrition can result in a weaker immune system, increased hospitalization, lower IQ, shorter attention spans, and lower academic achievement. Children are fed during the school week by federal government programs, but we want to make sure they’re getting nutritional meals over the weekend, too. All funds raised by Blessings in a Backpack stay in our community.
Food is distributed through a network of volunteers and school officials on Fridays before children leave for the weekend. The program serves children grades K-5 within Title 1 Elementary Public Schools. All students served are recipients of the national Free and Reduced Meal/Lunch program, and most recipients are in a household with a single parent or with parents who are classified as working poor.
