Blessings in a Backpack, Verandah join forces for charity sale

The more bargains shoppers find, the more food will go to hungry local children. Blessings in a Backpack of Southwest Florida is thrilled to announce it is partnering with Verandah golf community on its 10th annual fundraising garage sale.

The sale, scheduled for 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 10 at the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church social center on 13031 Palm Beach Blvd., has raised an astounding figure of more than $100,000 since it began in 2009. Blessings in a Backpack can feed a child every weekend during an entire school year for just $100, meaning the sale is poised to have a dramatic impact on curbing childhood hunger.

“An estimated one in five children go home from school each Friday not knowing when their next meal will be. This sale represents a powerful opportunity for everyone in the community to help children in dire need,” Blessings in a Backpack Executive Director Cecilia St. Arnold says. “Whether they have items to donate or just want to shop, people can really make a difference for their neighbors.”

Donations are being accepted 9 a.m.-noon MondayFriday through March 9 at the social center. Items likely to sell include the following:

  • Furniture and rugs
  • Linens
  • Bikes, skates
  • Sporting equipment
  • Gently used clothing and shoes
